What is a Chai Latte?

If you’ve never tried chai you’re probably thinking, what the heck is this, haha! So let me explain quick.

Chai originated 5000 to 9000 years ago in the royal courts of India. The king at the time crafted this recipe as a healing beverage with all the different spices. It was served both hot and cold but didn’t include black tea until the 1930s.

Chai lattes taste like a creamy, sweet yet spicy, cup of tea. The spices warm you from the inside out and make you feel well taken care of. The creaminess makes the cup indulgent along with the honey.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • chai spiced black tea bag
  • water
  • raw honey
  • half and half (or milk)
  • optional – sprinkle of ground cinnamon (for the top)

The Best Chai Tea Bags for a Chai Latte

Use any brand of chai spiced black tea bags. It’s best to choose a brand that doesn’t use plastic tea bags. I really like the Stash or Drink Habit brands.

Best Milk To Use

My favorite milk for chai lattes is half and half dairy milk. It makes the cup so creamy. If you use regular milk do know it will be a bit more watery and less on the creamy side. Same goes for plant-based milks.

Sweetening a Chai Latte

When it comes to sweetening a chai latte you’ll want to use a natural sweetener. The best option is raw honey but you can also use pure maple syrup.

How to Make a Chai Tea Latte With a Tea Bag

Heat water over high heat in a pot or kettle.

Take water off of heat right before it begins to boil, right when it starts to make a little noise.

Add tea bag to a mug and pour heated water over it.

While this is steeping, warm milk in a small saucepan over medium heat for about 3 minutes until it’s warm. Do not let this boil.

Once milk is warmed, pour into mug of steeping tea.Optional: If desired you can use a milk frother or electric frothing wand to froth the milk before pouring it into the mug.

Add honey (more if desired) and stir to combine.

Either leave the tea bag in while you enjoy your latte or take it out. Optional: Sprinkle the top with cinnamon and enjoy!

      Love this Chai Latte Recipe!!
So delicious, after a meal or to relax with.
I like to also use an extra tea bag (2) in my large 14oz. coffee mug {*only 1 rooibos tea bag}.
And leave the tea bags in a little longer {*not the rooibos tea bag}.
If I have it late in the evening I’ll use rooibos tea instead, so I don’t get the caffeine.

Thank you for sharing this recipe!!!
