Why Every Newlywed Needs a Sourdough Starter
I’m sharing why every newlywed needs a sourdough starter in this post. I’m sharing all the benefits of sourdough baking. I hope this post inspires you to start earlier and make a starter for your home!

8 Reasons Why Every Newlywed Needs a Sourdough Starter
Save Money on Groceries
I put this first for a reason. A sourdough starter will save you so much money on groceries! For example, it costs me less than a dollar to make a loaf of bread.
However, if I were to go to the grocery store and buy a loaf made with real, wholesome ingredients, it would be almost $5. Not to mention if I went to a farmer’s market and bought a $10 loaf of sourdough.
That’s just one example. When you have a sourdough starter, you can start making all bread items, buns, tortillas, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, pizza doughs, and other baked goods at home for less. The greatest thing is, the starter makes whipping these items up a breeze!
As a newlywed, you know how tight the budget can be. A starter will become your secret tool to help you eat delicious, wholesome food without breaking the bank!
Improve Gut Health
Did you know when you make an item with your sourdough starter and let the dough or batter ferment for 8+ hours, it adds gut health benefits?
This can make digestion easier and does wonderful things in your body. I highly recommend doing some research of your own on this topic.
I’m not a doctor or medical professional, so it’s not my place to tell you specifically, but the benefits are amazing!
Eliminate Nasty Additives in Food
If you’ve turned a box or package over in the grocery store lately, you know what I’m talking about. There are so many nasty additives, preservatives, and oils in prepackaged food. From crackers to mixes, it’s almost impossible to find “healthy” premade items.
That’s where a sourdough starter comes in to help you make these items at home. Trust me, when I first started my sourdough baking journey and decided to make premade foods at home, I got overwhelmed.
My tip is to choose one item each month to stop buying and start making at home. This makes it so much easier and less overwhelming.
Learn Skills That’ll Last a Lifetime
The skills you’ll learn with sourdough baking will last a lifetime. They’re something you can pass down from generation to generation. From bread baking to cooking from scratch, these skills are priceless.
Make Your Husband Feel Special
With a sourdough starter in your kitchen, you’ll be able to whip up special treats for your husband to make him feel special! Instead of grabbing that boxed cake or brownie mix to whip up on Saturday night, make them from scratch with your starter.
Your husband will be so proud of you if he’s anything like mine haha. He’ll feel so special that you made him a treat from scratch!
Gateway to Becoming a Homemaker
When you first get married, it can be a little overwhelming stepping into your role as a wife and homemaker. You’re not sure where to start or how to keep your home just yet. That’s where your starter can help you jump right in.
By starting in the kitchen and baking gut-healthy food from scratch, you’re learning something very helpful to get you started.
Make Budget-Friendly Treats as Gifts
As we talked about earlier, the budget can be a bit tight as newlyweds, which means gift-giving can be stressful. You want to make your friends and family feel special, but you don’t want to go broke in the process.
That’s where your sourdough starter comes to the rescue again. You can make your loved ones loaves of bread, baskets of sourdough scones, and even something extra special like cinnamon rolls or Danish pastries!
These baked goods made in your home from scratch will make them feel so loved and special. I do this all the time. I just made my mom, mother-in-law, and husband’s grandma lemon poppyseed scones for Mother’s Day. They loved them so much!
Enjoy a Hobby at Home
Depending on what age you get married, you might struggle with finding hobbies around home. I got married at age 20, but I’ve never been a party person. I’ve always considered myself a grandma, even as a teenager! My perfect Saturday night is spent under a blanket, sipping tea, and watching my favorite sitcom.
But I did have a hard time not wanting to go run errands all the time, hike, and try new coffee shops. So when I started my sourdough baking journey, it was nice to have a hobby at home. It not only gave me something fun to do, but it saved us gas money since I wasn’t driving around as much.
When you have a home-centered hobby, like sourdough baking, it makes making your home a priority so much fun!
