Sometimes the thought of homemade waffles can feel intimidating which is why I’ve created this simple recipe. From start to finish, it only takes 17 minutes. It’ll give you the ability to whip up a delicious, wholesome breakfast from scratch without taking an hour. If mornings are often overwhelming or short on time, make a batch over the weekend and freeze them. This will give you a healthy budget-friendly breakfast in minutes.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- raw honey
- sourdough starter (fed or discard)
- pure vanilla extract
- milk (dairy or dairy-free)
- salt
- baking powder
- all-purpose flour
Kitchen Tools You’ll Need

How to Make Sourdough Waffles
Preheat your waffle iron or maker.
In the meantime, in a mixing bowl, whisk together honey, sourdough starter, vanilla, and milk just until combined.
Add salt, baking powder, and flour to the wet ingredients and whisk again just until combined (avoid over mixing the batter).
When the waffle iron or maker is completely preheated, lightly grease the cooking surfaces with butter.
Add batter to the iron/maker 3/4th the way full (avoid overfilling).
Cook about 3-4 minutes or until the waffle easily comes out of the iron/maker and is golden brown.
Add your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Tips for Success
- Always let your waffle iron/maker heat up properly for crispy waffles
- Avoid over mixing sourdough waffle batter, it’ll make your waffles dense and chewy
- Add chocolate chips to your batter for a delicious twist
- If you’re all about savory flavors, serve these sourdough waffles with bacon (this is my husband and I’s favorite!)
Storage Instructions
If you’ve got extra waffles either store them in an air-tight glass container in your refrigerator for 2-3 days or freeze them. For freezing instructions read the section below. If you have leftover batter it can be stored in an air tight container in your fridge for up to 2 days.
Freezing Instructions
To freeze these sourdough waffles, cook them as my recipe tells you to then let them cool down to room temperature. This should only take 10-15 minutes. After cooling down, line them up about 1/2 inch apart on a parchment lined sheet pan and freeze for 1 hour. After this initial freeze, place them in a glass freezer-safe container with parchment between each one.
Another option is to wrap them in saran wrap individually and store them in a freezer storage bag. These sourdough waffles will last up to 3 months in your freezer.
How to Reheat Waffles
When you’re ready to enjoy a frozen homemade waffle, take one out of the freezer, unwrap it/take off parchment paper, and slip it straight into a toaster oven. If you don’t have a toaster, you can place them on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes at 425 degrees or until hot.

Our Favorite Waffle Toppings

- Chocolate chips (mixed into the batter)

These are so so delicious and easy to make!!!
You could eat these with out a syrup on them, that’s how good they are. But they are delicious with maple syrup or a fruit compote.
I am so happy you enjoyed this recipe!! I completely agree, they’re just as amazing when plain as they are with toppings! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!!
Thank you for such a yummy and easy to make recipe!! I had a bunch of starter I needed to use up so I decided to make a large batch of waffles to freeze. Never made sourdough waffles before, and I stumbled across this recipe. I will never use another recipe for waffles! This one is SO good and SO simple! I ended up making 5 batches I think. I made some exactly as written. I then made variations by adding chocolate chips, banana, and brown sugar. The kiddo ate 2 straight off the waffle iron without butter or syrup, they are just that good!
You are so welcome! I’m overjoyed to hear you love this recipe as much as we do! The addition of chocolate chips, bananas, and brown sugar sounds amazing! Thank you so much for your kind words!
