Inspiration Behind My Ham and Cheese Crescent Ring Recipe
Growing up, my mom would make my brother and me ham and cheese crescent rings for lunch. I always looked forward to that cheesy, buttery, savory meal. It smelled amazing in the oven and tasted even better!
Fast forward to today, and I’m still making that childhood favorite but with homemade sourdough crescent rolls. It’s a wholesome way to enjoy a crescent ring, and the fermented dough does something special.
I can’t wait for you to try this childhood favorite of mine with a twist. I hope you love it!

Why We Love This Crescent Ring and Think You Will Too!
- Made with Sourdough Crescent Rolls: No need for Pillsbury canned crescent rolls here!
- Quick and Easy: This recipe takes little hands-on time and bakes in 25 minutes.
- Perfect for Kids: This is a fun recipe to make and enjoy with kids. They’ll love it!
- Delicious Reheated: When warmed in the oven, they’re amazing reheated.
- Simple Ingredients: There are no junky ingredients here, just simple, wholesome whole foods.
Why Make a Crescent Wreath with Sourdough?
When you make crescent rolls with sourdough discard, you get fermentation benefits from the sourdough starter’s cultures. If you long ferment the dough in the fridge for 12-24 hours before baking, those cultures ferment the other ingredients. This long fermentation is optional but adds even more fermentation benefits!

My Tips for Making Crescent Ham and Cheese Rolls Ups
- Read the entire recipe before you get started so you know what to expect.
- Place the ham and cheese in the center of the triangles so it’s easier to roll up.
- Make the crescent ring on a piece of parchment paper so it’s easier to transfer to the sheet pan.
- Don’t skimp on the topping, it’s what creates an even more savory falvor.

Ingredients You’ll Need (with notes and substitutions)
Note: Please see the recipe card at the bottom of this blog post for measurements
- unbaked sourdough crescent roll dough: make this a few days ahead if desired and store in the fridge
- uncured ham: I like to use uncured ham off the bone, from Sprouts, that has no preservatives, nitrites, or nitrates
- mild cheddar cheese: you could also use sharp cheddar, white cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite cheese
- egg wash (egg and milk): this coats the top of the crescent rolls so they’re golden brown
- yellow mustard: I like to use organic but you can use regular
- poppyseeds: these can be optional if desired
- sea salt: this is a wholesome salt option that I love using
Variations
- Add pickled pepperoncinis alongside the ham and cheese for a vinegary bite
- Switch up the cheese to any kind you love
- Add mustard inside the roll-ups for a mustardy flavor
- Add Worcestershire to the topping for an even more savory flavor

How to Make Sourdough Ham and Cheese Crescent Ring
Note: Please see the recipe card at the bottom of this blog post for the full written recipe.
Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper and preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Slice the Sourdough Crescent Dough

Lightly dust counter with flour and roll homemade crescent dough into a large rectangle about 1/4 inch thick (approximately a 15 x 11 rectangle).

Using a pizza cutter or knife, slice dough in half horizontally so you have two rectangles. Then slice both sections in half vertically to make 4 rectangles. Finally, slice each rectangle in half diagonally so you have 8 triangles.
Make the Sourdough Crescent Ring

Place crescent dough triangles on parchment lined sheet pan by placing the large ends of the triangles in an oval shape, overlapping their edges, around the pan. The pointy end of the triangles should be hanging off the sides.

Add 1 slice of ham and cheese to each triangle in the middle, between the triangle’s pointy and large end.

Roll each triangle, by folding in the point end in and rolling over ham and cheese. Press down rolled dough into the large end to create a seal. Repeat with all 8.

Combine egg wash, mustard, poppyseeds, and sea salt in a small bowl. Whisk until completely combined and brush on top of crescent ring. You will have extra topping, discard or save for another use.

Bake 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and cheese is melted.
Slice each roll up for individual servings and enjoy!
My Favorites to Serve with Ham and Cheese Crescent Rolls
I love serving these crescent rolls for lunch by themselves or with a homemade side! Here are a few of my favorites:
- Served alongside no-sugar-added fruit salad
- With a refreshing Italian chopped salad
- With homemade honey mustard for dipping
How to Store Leftover Crescent Wreath
Once leftovers have cooled down, place each ham and cheese roll-up in a glass, airtight container. They’ll last in the fridge for 3–4 days.
Freezing and Thawing Instructions
To freeze, make sure roll ups are completely cooled off after baking and then place them in a glass, freezer-safe container. A plastic baggie will work too, but I personally don’t like the taste it gives the roll-ups. They’ll last 3 months in the freezer.
To thaw, place roll-ups in the fridge overnight or until thawed. You can also reheat them straight from the freezer if desired.

My Favorite Way to Heat Up Leftover Crescent Rolls
The best way to warm ham and cheese crescent rolls is in a toaster oven on the lowest setting until warm or in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until warm. Both work wonderfully! This also allows the crescent dough to crisp up.
