There’s something about bbq chicken during summer that feels a little extra special. Growing up, my mom would make bbq chicken legs on the grill. I loved that supper!
Now as my husband and I are living in a townhome, we have little space outdoors for a grill, so we’ve opted for an indoor kitchen one. It does the job and makes tasty grilled recipes possible!

- Quick Recipe: Especially if you’re using a grill, this recipe can be made very quickly!

Best Flatbread for this Pizza
You can use any kind of flatbread for this recipe. But I think the best option is homemade sourdough flatbread. You get gut benefits from the fermentation and because you’re making it at home, you won’t have to worry about additives.

Best BBQ Sauce for this Pizza
You can use any bbq sauce. But as someone who enjoys making most things from scratch, I love using my homemade Nashville bbq sauce. It’s really simple to make and tastes amazing!
A good Nashville bbq sauce is a little sweet, a little tangy, a little spicy, with a hint of smokiness. That’s my husband and I’s favorite type but maybe we’re a little biased!
Extra Toppings to Add
You don’t have to add any extra toppings, but you definitely can! Here are a few ideas:
- banana peppers
- jalapeños
- red onion
- yellow onion
- bell pepper (red or green)
- pineapple

Ingredients You’ll Need (with notes)

Chicken
- boneless skinless chicken breast: I like to use a medium-sized one
- salt: sea salt is my favorite
- ground black pepper: adds so much flavor
- garlic powder: make sure you use a salt-free version

Homemade Nashville BBQ Sauce
- ketchup: I only use an organic ketchup that has clean ingredients. Kroger’s Simple Truth is a great choice
- brown sugar: adds the perfect sweetness
- apple cider vinegar: makes it a little tangy
- worcestershire: adds that iconic bbq flavor
- cayenne: adds a little heat
- salt: I always use sea salt
- ground black pepper: gives it a peppery flavor
- smoked paprika: adds the hint of smokiness
- garlic powder: adds flavor to the sauce
- onion powder: adds more flavor

Other
- flatbread: you can use any but I recommend homemade!
- grated low-moisture mozzarella cheese: make sure you use low-moisture
- optional – fresh cilantro: adds the perfect freshness

How to Make BBQ Chicken Flatbread Pizza
Season the Chicken

First season the chicken breast on both sides with the salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Grill or Bake the Chicken

- on the grill at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes or until cooked fully (flip half way through)
- or in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes in a baking dish until cooked fully

Let the cooked chicken rest for 5 minutes then shred it into small pieces. Set aside for now.
Make the BBQ Sauce
(You can do this while the chicken cooks)

Add all bbq sauce ingredients to a small mixing bowl and whisk until combined.
Assemble the Flatbread Pizza
Shred the cheese if not done already and set aside.

Add a layer of bbq sauce to the flatbread (as thick as desired).

Then add on shredded chicken and finally the shredded cheese.
Grill or Bake the Pizza

- on the grill for 5-10 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit (low-medium heat) until cheese is melted and bubbly. Close the grill if using an outdoor grill. If using an indoor one hover the lid just over the top. If it’s not melting fast enough you can turn the temperature up to 425 degrees but keep a close eye on it.
- in the oven at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly

Once cooked, slice it into pieces, add cilantro to the top, and enjoy!

Make Ahead Instructions

I sure do! My sourdough flatbread recipe is simple and easy to make. P.S. It tastes so much better than store-bought!
Yes, you can. My advice is to add a few jalapenos or pickled jalapenos to the toppings. This will add a little heat and an amazing flavor!
Another option is to add a hot honey drizzle. I make mine by mixing honey and hot sauce until the heat level we desire.
