Inspiration Behind My Sourdough Garlic Bread Recipe

My husband and I have always loved garlic bread. We both grew up eating different kinds, so after we got married, of course, I made it for us!

Fast-forward a few years into our marriage, and I decided to develop a sourdough version that was super easy to make at home!

This recipe has become my go-to quick side when I need something else for supper. I hope you love it just as much as we do!

Why We Love This Garlic Bread and Think You Will Too!

  • Wholesome Ingredients: Each ingredient is wholesome; you don’t have any nasty additives or ingredients like in the boxed version at the store.
  • Added Sourdough: The sourdough discard adds such a delicious flavor, and some added fermentation benefits.
  • Simple Instructions: Every step so simple, any home cook can follow along.
  • The Perfect Side: This bread is such a good side for salads, pizza night, pasta meals, soups, and more!

Why Make Garlic Bread with Sourdough Bread

When you make garlic bread with sourdough, you get fermentation benefits from the sourdough starter’s cultures. If you long ferment the dough in the fridge for 12-24 hours before baking, those cultures ferment the other ingredients. This long fermentation is optional but adds even more fermentation benefits!

My Tips for Making Garlic Sourdough Bread

  1. Read the entire recipe before you get started so you know what to expect.
  2. Use fresh cloves of garlic for the best flavor!
  3. Don’t skip the parsley; it adds that store-bought, restaurant-style garlic bread look.

Ingredients You’ll Need (with notes and substitutions)

Note: Please see the recipe card at the bottom of this blog post for measurements

  • butter: I love using grass-fed, salted butter but you can use any
  • cloves of fresh garlic: if you don’t have fresh garlic, use 1/2 tsp of garlic powder for each clove
  • dried parsley: you could also use fresh but I recommend adding it after baking
  • sea salt: this is my favorite wholesome salt option
  • sourdough bread: homemade is the best, I use my sourdough sandwich bread

Storing Leftovers

Store leftover garlic bread in an airtight container, preferably glass. You can store it at room temperature for 1–2 days or in the fridge for 3–4 days.

How to Reheat Garlic Bread

Place leftover garlic bread on a sheet pan and warm in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until your desired temperature and texture are reached.

Freezing Instructions, Make Ahead Instructions

Freezing/Making Ahead: I recommend making the garlic bread but waiting to bake it. Instead, place pieces of parchment paper between each slice and freeze in a freezer-safe container. They’ll last 3–6 months in the freezer.

Heating from Frozen: No thawing needed! Simply preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, lay slices of bread butter side up, and bake until thawed and a desired temperature/texture are reached.

This is a great replacement for frozen store-bought garlic bread!
