Like regular Philly cheesesteaks, this recipe calls for an onion, green bell pepper, salt, and pepper. The difference is in the beef. Instead of steak, you’ll use lean ground beef. I like 85% lean organic grass-fed ground beef. It has the most nutrition and still tastes yummy.

Recipe Inspiration

After moving into our townhome, we quickly fell in love with regular Philly cheesesteaks cooked on the stovetop. However, as time went on, we felt the need to tighten our grocery budget while still enjoying our favorite meals. That’s when I made a clever switch, replacing the steak with more budget-friendly ground beef.

To make weeknight suppers even easier, I decided to try a slow cooker approach. I tossed everything into the crockpot and let it simmer on low. After one bite of this new creation, the Philly cheesesteak sloppy joes, we knew we had a winner! It has become a beloved staple for our Sunday night dinners, and when loved ones come to visit.

Kitchen Equipment You’ll Need

Storage and Reheating Leftovers

For hassle-free storage, use glass containers to store leftover Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes. Refrigerate or freeze them for later. When freezing, uncover the glass dish and place it in a turned-off oven before preheating to safely warm the glass. Then, cook at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes after the initial preheat. Enjoy your delicious leftovers!

Extra Tips and Tricks

  • If you forget to thaw meat out or guests are coming for supper within 12 hours, use frozen beef. It turns out just as delicious and you only have to cook it an extra hour.
  • When you’re adding the cheese make the ingredients an even layer so it’s easy to melt cheese over everything.
  • Toss the plastic crockpot inserts, simply brush the inside with olive oil for a healthier nonstick.
